English Rendition: "Pardon us, forgive us, and show us bounteous mercy"
From the final verse of Surah al-Baqarah, this calligraphy carries three profound invocations: wa‘fu ʿannā, waghfir lanā, warḥamnā: pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. The words are written in Jalī Thuluth, a monumental script first refined in the 9th–10th centuries and later perfected under the Ottomans, celebrated for its sweeping curves and commanding elegance. They are arranged in an istif, a carefully balanced composition developed in the Ottoman calligraphic tradition, where letters interlace like architecture in ink. Rendered eventually in a deep crimson hue, the piece came together over the course of several months, a process of devotion as much as artistry, resulting in a work that unites prayer, history, and beauty.
