English Rendition: “Remove your sandals,” Qur’an, Sūrat Ṭāhā (20:12)
Placed near an entryway, this piece serves as a quiet reminder to cross the threshold with presence. It invites the dwellers of the home to leave behind the burdens of the day and preserve peace within, and it gently tells each visitor that they have entered a sanctuary, a space of calm and welcome.
The two commanding words are rendered in Jalī Thuluth, their tall verticals and flowing ligatures meeting in a carefully proportioned istif (the Ottoman term for a written calligraphic composition). The balanced geometry reflects the etiquette of passage, from outer world to inner stillness, from the dust of travel to the purity of repose.
The sweeping kāf extends beyond the composition, a single stroke reaching into open space, like the act of stepping through the doorway and setting one’s weight down. The letters that precede it gather softly at its base, holding what has been released. The chosen ink deepens the sense of quiet reverence that belongs to this pause between worlds.
Limited edition giclée print on natural cotton fine-art paper, produced from the original hand-made piece by award-winning calligrapher Ahmet Namazi.
