English Rendition: “Eat and drink, but do not be wasteful,” Qur’ān (7:31)

This verse frames nourishment as an act of worship, receiving God’s provision with gratitude and restraint. The composition forms an ovoid shape reminiscent of a seed: a symbol of divine unity, for from the One seed unfolds countless forms of life. To waste, then, is to forget the Source from which all variety springs.

Rendered in Jalī Thuluth within a carefully balanced istif (the Ottoman term for a written calligraphic composition), the rounded bowls of the letters evoke fullness, while the upward strokes recall growth and renewal. The shape also suggests a human fingerprint, the trace of one who eats, receives, and leaves a mark, reminding us that provision carries accountability.

The earthy brown ink calls to mind soil, bread, and sustenance itself, grounding this piece in the warmth of creation. It transforms a familiar space into one of mindful gratitude and moral beauty.

Limited edition giclée print on natural cotton fine-art paper, produced from the original hand-made piece by award-winning calligrapher Ahmet Namazi.
