English Rendition: “So then remove your sandals,” Qur’ān, Surah Ṭāhā (20:12).
This piece invites everyone entering the home to leave behind the burdens of the day at the door. Just as this verse instructed the Prophet Musa of the sanctity of the Valley of Tuwa, it gently reminds each visitor that the home they have entered is a sanctuary of calmness and warmth.
Composed by award-winning calligrapher Ahmet Namazi, the sweeping kāf extends beyond the composition, a single stroke reaching into open space, like the act of stepping through the doorway. The letters that precede it gather softly at its base, holding what has been released. The crimson ink stresses the urgency of reverently entering a home that rightfully belongs to this pause between worlds.
The two commanding words are rendered in Jalī Thuluth, their tall verticals and flowing ligatures meeting in a carefully proportioned istif (the Ottoman term for a written calligraphic composition). The balanced geometry reflects the etiquette of passage, from outer world to inner stillness, from the dust of travel to the purity of repose.
